Discovering Salanfe

A haven for lovers of the great outdoors, Salanfe is not only a hiking destination. Fishing, mountain-biking and ski-touring are also popular ways to discover the area. Historically, the area experienced a great deal of controversy throughout the twentieth century with the building of the dam. The gravity dam in Salanfe has a storage capacity of 40 million cubic metres. It is 52m high, with a width of 40m at the base and a top length of 608m. Made up of 42 blocks, mostly measuring 14m in breadth, its total volume consists of 230 000 cubic metres of concrete.

Salanfe’s discovery trail was opened in 2000, it will lead you to discover the wide variety of fauna and flora of the region

The most magnificent alpine pasture in Switzerland, “The Marvel” as Emile Javel named it, was an inspiration to many Romantics. The writings of Javel, Rambert and others led to the development of the surrounding villages of Salvan, Finhaut and Champex, with a predilection for Salanfe.

The sparkling waters of Lake Salanfe offer an idyllic setting for recreational fishing. The lake is well-stocked: mountain trout, christie and rainbow troutwill delight die-hard and novice fishermen alike.
